Rehvaro - Who I am ?
Hello !
Let's try the presentation section ^^
So, as (I think) you have guessed, I'm Rehvaro ( or Fabien IRL ).
So, who I am ?
I'm a French guy of 26 years old, from Reims (city of Champagne etc etc). Not specially good with English writing (I learn by practice !) ^^
I work as an IT engineer for Reims University Supercalculator "ROMEO" (yes, we can run Blender ), so, basically, I'm a computer scientist (but only the software part of it).
I like to explore and learn many things. I learn Photography, Drawing, Digital Painting, 3D Printing, etc.
I like to play video-games, and I would like to have the time to... no... I would like to take the time to make games, even basic ones, because I think it's the best media to let people explore and discover a world, a universe, that you have created.
So I want to learn Blender, UE4, and start something ^^
Also... I'm a big fan of Myst. But I no longer play them ! Because I want to forget them before replaying
I would like to recreate Anna journey to D'ni, as an experiment for creating a game. Not something challenging for the player I think, but something more contemplative.
But I have nothing to introduce you...yet. I will post on this forum as soon I have done something (but I don't know when) ^^
I'm really happy peoples like Babel Studio, Simon Says games, etc continue doing games like this ! And I wish you the best for your RealMYHA Kickstarter
So, I think that's all.
Any question ? ^^

Re: Rehvaro - Who I am ?
Welcome to the IceHouse Revharo.
And good for you for trying to make game. It is indeed a compelling media, and, as a creator, a quite unique way to share stories with your audience.
As you stated, the main (and most important) step into creating a video game , or any kind of creative endeavor, is to take the time to do so. We could almost say "make" the time.
If you are working on something as complex as "ROMEO" I doubt grasping the basics of the UE4 would be of any challenge to you, so don't even fret about it. There are plenty of very good tutorial out there that will carry you trough.
Hopping to hear more of you soon !
Cheers!

Bienvenu Rehvaro.
Looking forward to hearing more about you and your work/ideas/etc.
If you need advice - just ask, that is what the Icehouse is about. We cannot always guarantee to get back quickly, but if we can, we will.

Re: Rehvaro - Who I am ?
Welcome here!
Oh yes, learning UE4 should be a piece of cake for you Take your time, it has to remain a pleasure!
By the way guys (Prom, or Bananeisafree) are there good tutorials to begin with UE4 in a user-friendly way? I mean: the UE4 documentation is good (it is what I am using) but it's not very friendly compared to what I've seen in Unity. I know that a lot of people have made youtube videos, some are great, others are bad, but it's hard to know before you watch them all (which takes time). Have you seen some good things to begin with? Thanks

Re: Rehvaro - Who I am ?
I'm not sure my work could help me with UE4, I'm mostly use linux, command lines, documentations, scripting, etc. Nothing very creative ^^
Prom361 already send me a while ago via email, links to tutorials creators like:
Meletou1 in french
Hourences, creator of The Solus Project
Tesla Dev
Devin Sherry
etc
So it's up to me now !
Thanks again.

Re: Rehvaro - Who I am ?
Scripting and code are creative! I doubt many of us here could match your ability. I started learning c# and have struggled. Never say Never!
Re: Rehvaro - Who I am ?
Well, well, well... a new friend to add to the family!
WELCOME REHVARO!!
I'm agree with Roger, scripting and code is another style of creativity... you have the power of create everything from nothing!
I'm glad to see you are a fan of Myst games, here are many like you.
I encourage you to learn UE4, or better yet Unity , surely with perseverance you can get wonderful things!
"Breathe, relax, create!"

Hey Rehvaro!
Any more news? How are things going? Are you anywhere nearer to developing a game, or have you questions you need answered?
Please do feel free to keep in touch.

Re: Rehvaro - Who I am ?
Hello !
I'm still far from creating a game.
But I'm learning !
(And because I have a lot of work for the next 2 weeks, I'm slower than usual).
I haven't used C++ for a while so I relearn it (I was waiting a occasion to relearn it for a while). And I have started studying how C++ can communicate with Blueprints and UE4, to use the best technology (C++ or BP) when I think it's the best in a project.
I will try do to a very very (very (very)) simple escape room to experiment with that.
If I can easily export it, I could post it here if you want ^^
Thanks for asking !

Re: Rehvaro - Who I am ?
Great News, Look forward to the results. Take your time over it and don't rush things.
Re: Rehvaro - Who I am ?
It's nice to hear you are learning to improve your skills, don't hesitate to inform us of your progress!
Learn = Grow
Learn = Grow
Re: Rehvaro - Who I am ?
Well I'm also trying to learn Unreal slowly, so maybe we can motivate each other?
Re: Rehvaro - Who I am ?
I have watched many tutorials during the past few months but didn't have much time to experiment. And honestly I don't really know where to start! The blueprint is complicated for me, I find it hard to get the logic...
Re: Rehvaro - Who I am ?
I see BP as an abstraction of code functions.
Each "box" (not sure of the name, I will call them like that) is something that can modify data it receive and export modified data to something else ( it like function/method), or simply export data from UE4(like get variable), or modify something in UE4 from data received (like set variable).
Like:
"Get Door"---->"Get angle"---->"Add 90 to z axis"---->"To Z axis"
........\________________________________________Î
"Get door" our starting data (the door object)
"Get angle" get a part of this data (the angle)
"Add 90 to z axis" modify the data
"To Z axis" will apply the modify data on UE4
So the door will rotate 90 around his Z axis each time this is executed.
I haven't UE4 were I am at the moment, so I think available "boxes" aren't exactly like this in UE4, but it's a example.
But yes, there is complicated boxes, and methods to use them, and I think the "Try-fail-try again- success" method is the best for that (with documentation )
Maybe that's not the problem and you already understand that, but I think this is the basics and after that, everything is a matter of experience, and learning what are the "boxes" available and how to use them.

Re: Rehvaro - Who I am ?
I think they call it boxes officially (in french Meletou says "boîtes").
I've seen a lot of explanations and videos about the blueprint and I can't get the good logic. Using variables is complicated, linking the boxes is not clear for me...
I will need a lot of practice and start with very simple things! I know the basics of algorithmic programmation, but here I don't succeed to reproduce it.
At least I can try to create scenes without programmation for the moment...

Re: Rehvaro - Who I am ?
Well Well - seems like a true conversation has started here.
Since both of you guys sont Francais - Pourquoi ne communiquez-vous pas en français?
If you get stuck ask me or Juanjo in English (or spanish in Juanjo's case)

Re: Rehvaro - Who I am ?
If we really want to try to learn, it's probably better if we create a dedicated thread for Learning Unreal Engine4!
Re: Rehvaro - Who I am ?
haha
Yes French would be simpler, but writing is also a training for me (I think i have spelling and grammar mistakes everywhere).
And when non french speakers may be interested in what we say, I think it worth the effort to write in english ^^
But yes if we talk in "private" (or a dedicated thread maybe), I think it will be in french
And yes Simon, I think we can find a better place for that ^^
