Adventure Jam 2019
First topic message reminder :
Hi there!
Yes, Adventure Jam 2019 is around the corner!
For the fifth year in a row, anyone with a computer, an idea, and an internet connection is invited to create an adventure game over the course of 14 days (the jam runs from June 8 until June 22)!
For more info visit the official website in Game Jolt:
http://jams.gamejolt.io/advjam2019
Of course I'm going to participate... this is one of my favorite jams.
This time I hope that many of you can participate, maybe we can create a Icehouse collaborative entry? It could be fun!
PS: I'm going to die... I just have a week to rest from Cyberpunk jam xDD

Don't worry Simon, I understand you perfectly about your thoughts regarding jam events.
I have suffered, I have cried and I have bled every jam... now I'm an almost perfect machine... every time I learn more about you, humans.

Re: Adventure Jam 2019
I can't wait! I hope we are all in the top10, and that we will have good results with the Judges. Really I can't wait to discover the final results
I'm very motivated by MVEM, I have decided to continue this game and make a full version.

Re: Adventure Jam 2019
Those are great news Simon! I'm glad to hear that you're going to continue with the game, it's amazing what you've done in such a short time, so I can't imagine what you can do with more time and resources.
About the voting, any result will be good, for me it has been great to see you (Yves, Yaz, and you Simon) work on a new project... it was magical!

Re: Adventure Jam 2019
Erg... Just saw the result of the votes. I'm so disappointed Not any of us is in the top 10 games before us.
I think there's a flauw in the voting process.......

Re: Adventure Jam 2019
Well, it's not too bad!

In my opinion the categories to vote are a bit confusing... for example, what about music or sound design? To be honest, this jam has been a bit weird...
But was fun!

Re: Adventure Jam 2019
You're going to laugh, but I think it's a great result! By comparison, Kitrinos was 29/67 while here MVEM is 12/56. In some areas (atmosphere and emotional), this game is even part of the top 10. Frankly, it's a very good score. The side "countryside / childhood" style demarcates this game, and proves that there is something to attract players. Bravo!
Re: Adventure Jam 2019
Thanks! It doesn't change my motivation to make the full game anyway. My questionning is more... how should I make it? What content should remain and change to make most players happy? What would have been needed to be in the top 10? I wish I could have answers to these questions before I start working on the game for real. The score itself is not very important (except for the judges, who will only look at the top 10). Having the opinion of the judges (professional devs) would have helped me to concretize my new game.
Re: Adventure Jam 2019
I just discovered some very interesting news. I'm sure you are all familiar with Dave Gilbert of Wadjet Eye Games. He is a professional game designer who has been producing commercial games in Adventure Game Studio since 2006. Anyway, he decided to anonymously participate in adventure jam 2019 (He didn't want his name to attract attention.) His game is Old Skies. It ranked #13. It was his first attempt at a 3D game so I'll admit he was out of his element, but regardless, that means Simon out ranked a professional game designer!!! Now if that isn't something to be proud of I don't know what is!

Re: Adventure Jam 2019
Are you sure? It sounds so strange. I wonder if it was really Dave Gilbert, why would he try to do 3D during a Jam? He has a lot of talent for 2D pixel games and must be busy managing Wadjet Eye Games.
Anyway I'm also a professional game designer, it's my job

Of course you are a professional game designer Simon! I was only saying you out ranked another designer, I thought that would make you feel a little better.

Re: Adventure Jam 2019
I agree with Yaz and Josiah - The work submitted was excellent - fact is the voting/judging (as all too often) was just Crap!
Re: Adventure Jam 2019
Well, it seems that the experiment has gone very well for Mr. Gilbert, everyone talks about it...

Re: Adventure Jam 2019
Mmh... PC Gamers (and many other sites) never replied to my messages about ASA/Catyph/Myha, never wrote a word on them. But a rank 13 project in a Game Jam has an article Well I'm not surprised, that's how things work....... But instead of talking about this game specifically, it's a shame that PC Gamers didn't talk of the whole Adventure Jam more generally. I have the feeling that Dave Gilbert thinks the same, and that's why he registered in secret: he wanted to avoid that kind of result.
That being said, the game of Dave is very good, I tried it. The 3d is outdated and far from polished (and it's not a problem during a jam), however the content/gameplay and many other things are "pro", which gives a very good feeling when you play the game.

Re: Adventure Jam 2019
Well, we all know how this world works... unfortunately.
I totally agree with you Simon, PC Gamer should have talked about the jam in general and not about Gilbert in particular...
In any case, it seems that the article didn't like much on the Discord server of the jam, there are many people who are saying the same as us. PC Gamer even had to modify the article (at Gilbert's request) because they didn't recognize as a professional the actress who has put the voice in the game (it must be said that it was the girl in Discord who said this and "forced" Gilbert to ask PC Gamer to change it).
On the other hand, I don't doubt that the game of Gilbert is good (to be honest I didn't play it because I wasn't attracted to it), I think it's great that famous people participate in such humble events but at the same time it's sad that they have to do it anonymously... although it's totally understandable.

Re: Adventure Jam 2019
Well, even if someday I became "famous" (I don't hope so), I think I would continue to participate to a few Jams from time to time. And during these Jams I would do my best to encourage the other participants. Being anonymous during a Jam is not a good solution according to me. It is better to use this "power" to increase the potential of the other games and attract more people to be interested in the Jam.
Re: Adventure Jam 2019
Totally agree.
Please don't become a famous person, I don't want to lose a friend (it's a joke xDD)

Re: Adventure Jam 2019
Don't either of you become famous!!!!!!!!!! What will I do if you become "The next great thing"!
What we need is that as a group, we become "noticed" , which may be already happening?
Maybe the fact that Dave Gilbert became involved might "spice" things up a bit. I have often wondered what the point of Jams is? They seem to make Devs and others go into an almost "panic" mode - where they need to be "seen" to be involved, but, in reality, never seem to result in any concrete result for those involved? I am not saying that they should end (as I can see many of the outcomes are a development of the individual devs involved), but if there is no concrete result for anyone, what is the point? (other than self-improvement), and who gains?
