Ad Astra - A new science fiction movie
Hi there!
Yesterday I finally saw Ad Astra, a movie I really wanted to see... but it was not what I expected.
I expected something more like Interstellar (movie that I love). Ad Astra tries to be deep but fails to achieve it (in my opinion), I found it slow and sometimes a bit absurd (there is a moment of fighting with monkeys in a space station...no words).
Brad Pitt's performance is the best of the film, Tommy Lee Jones and Donald Sutherland also appear but for me their roles are not very good, I think they could have been exploited much more.
The plot is good, the search for extraterrestrial life is always something that fascinates me, but in this movie for me it is not well developed.
Maybe my problem was to expect something like Interstellar, my expectations were high... and that's why I didn't like Ad Astra, I don't know.
In any case, if you like science fiction and space movies you should see it.
Have you seen the movie? What do you think? Did you like it? Tell us!

Thanks for sharing Juanjo, I was really looking forward to your comments!
Strangely that is a little bit what I was fearing: they sold us a huge movie with Brad Pitt, who's certainly great in this role, but I almost immediately thought that the story would be disapointing in the end. I could feel that something was wrong in the trailers, mixing many different things with beautiful views in space, but the result looked a bit odd (high quality pictures however).
That's a shame if you didn't like it a lot, there was a big potential... That being said I will be happy to see it someday, when I will have the time (not in theater, I almost never have the opportunity).
Interstellar was probably the best scifi movie I saw for a long while now. Oh and The Martian too (Matt Damon), I liked this one even if it was more "space cowboy"-like

Not surprisingly, Brad Pitt has been one of the producers of the film...
The Martian, another great movie, no doubt.

Re: Ad Astra - A new science fiction movie
For me the problem is that we are now too accustomed to space exploration, and the prospect of space travel. The older films were made when everything was either new or had not yet happened, so there was a lot more imagination. The intention of the films were to create an "expectancy" that was based upon more limited knowledge. Now space films have become a "fantasy" territory, so they ares beginning to lose the magic
Re: Ad Astra - A new science fiction movie
Roger, I totally agree, they are losing the ability to surprise and originality. But as you say, it's becoming more and more complicated to make movies (games, books...) with fresh and novel (is it the right word?) ideas, it's one of the things I miss in cinema, especially.
