Pilgrims - The new game by Amanita Designs
Hi there!
Booom! Amanita Design (Machinarium, Samorost, Botanicula...) has released a new game by surprise!
About the game:
Roam the land as you please and make new friends, share a laugh with your fellow travelers and help them complete their little stories, your way. How many different solutions can you find?
Official website:
https://amanita-design.net/games/pilgrims.html
It is already on sale for about 5€ at:
Steam
GOG
Itch.io
I'm not a big lover of this kind of games but I recognize the quality when I see it, but I'm sure Simon loves it, isn't it?

I will give it a while or so, before I get seriously involved. Amanita started out so totally brilliant, but I feel that they might be losing their edge a bit these days?
Re: Pilgrims - The new game by Amanita Designs
I've played all of the Samorost games, Machinarium, and Botanicula. Haven't gotten around to Chuchel yet. But a great surprise! I will definitely check this one out at some point. I really enjoy the art style and curious about the multiple solutions!

Re: Pilgrims - The new game by Amanita Designs
I really like the work of Amanita. I can't say I'm a big fan because I don't support them actively and I didn't play all their games I think. However, on the contrary of many other studios, I find that they have not become crazy trying to do AAA games while they can't. It's true that they've evolved (which might give the feeling that they lost themselves on the road) but I think there was no other way for them... People are asking for new experiences all the time. If they had simply done a Machinarium 2 just after the first one, the press and influencers would have complained because of the lack of evolution (even if their fans are awaiting for a Machinarium 2). This is a delicate situation for a studio, but they are good at creating so many different creatures and worlds that it would have been a shame not to try, at least...
Most of the games (in general: Myst, Final Fantasy, Mario, etc) that have met success have had one or several sequels that disapointed. This is just normal. Not that the studios had lost something and created shit all of a sudden, but because they had no other choice but to come with new ideas: the market is like that. And new ideas = more risks = can be disapointing.
In the case of Amanita I am not disapointed for the moment, because their games have received a lot of talented skills and because they are in 2d I find that they don't get "old" with time.
There are better projects than others in their creations, but globally they all have some kind of charm.
If you look at Chuchel, ok I complained a bit because it's not an adventure game, but honestly the work and animation skills that have been put in it are fantastic. Chuchel is funny, everyone will have a smile at playing it.
The Samorost games are good too, the 3rd one was really a nice journey in weird worlds. Botanicula was exciting, even if people were looking for something more mature after Machinarium.
No really, I think they didn't lose their edge and that they still have a lot to show in the future. We mustn't forget that they remain a small studio, they work in 2D, while most players buy huge 3D games. It's challenging for them to renew their projects while keeping a huge fan base if they want to continue like that. So I'm not surprise that they try to bring diversity in their games.
I'm a bit more worried about Creaks (I don't like the animation of the character and the dark world where it takes place, compared to the interesting rusty world of Machinarium for example). But this is strictly personal.
And this new Pilgrim game looks like a very good surprise. I'll give it a try someday, without awaiting too much of it...

This one looks like a game designed to be open to large public but also devices, with both touch-screens/pad/mouse compatibilities, and casual players in mind.
Re: Pilgrims - The new game by Amanita Designs
Yes, and I think they will do it everytime now. If I am not mistaken they have released all their previous games on touch devices. It's probably a good idea for that kind of small 2d game?
Yves if you want to try it I got a copy

You have a Windows build I guess ? I'd like an Android version, I'll not appreciate playing it on PC...
Re: Pilgrims - The new game by Amanita Designs
I'll pass on this one. Doesn't interest me. I've played Machinarium and I enjoyed it but the rest doesn't attract me.
But those people are very talented and the good thing is that they have developed their own unique style and identity.
