Short project for Post-Apocalyptic Jam 2017
There I go!
Ok, as I explained in the jam thread I want to create something short and focused in the narrative but of course the graphics will be very important... you know
This week I have working in the story and finally I think I have something interesting but I want to polish it, Only I can say that it has to see with the overpopulation of the planet. Anyway I will publish it on Monday surely... be patient
Regarding the atmosphere and the style, I have searching some inspiration in games such Fallout, The last of us, Mad Max and Rage, where the world is devastated and a few people survive the hecatomb.
Here some images that I will use as reference:
The mechanics and other aspects of the project are still unclear but will surely be the same as my other creations, simple and easy, like a walking simulator.
And this is all for the moment, I just want to share my initial feelings about this short project, I hope you like it

As per usual, your tastes stand out as an example for all of us.
Re: Short project for Post-Apocalyptic Jam 2017
The Last of US is sure a great reference
And Fallout too, of course.
What else could I add? SHOW US YOUR GAME!!!
(see, I can't wait! ^^)

Science fiction and post apocalyptic are my 2 favorite themes in games and movies. Can't wait to see this Juanjo, good luck!

Re: Short project for Post-Apocalyptic Jam 2017
Thanks guys! Your support motivates me even more!
I hope the next week I can share some concept art and the story, stay tuned.
As always I don't want to create great expectations, you know my programming skills very well and the result is not always as I hope, but I want to have fun and that this jam relaxes me.
Breathe, Relax, Create. I love this slogan.

Re: Short project for Post-Apocalyptic Jam 2017
You're right Josiah
It's sometimes difficult (at least for me) to stay focused on the most important in creation, because we have to deal with our personal problems, but the most important is to try to have fun even if some stages of the development can be painful.
A project created with enthusiasm can only be a good project, and in the end please the people who will discover/play it!
Breathe, Relax, Create... a slogan for the Icehouse collective? :p Unless there is already a copyright for Luminy Studios ^^
Anyway good luck Juanjo for the jam, and have fun! We'll all be happy to discover the result of your work.

Re: Short project for Post-Apocalyptic Jam 2017
You might actually discover that the mantra/slogan is my creation? By all means use it.
The intention was to provide a simple (but hopefully effective) sequence to remove stress, lack of morivation, etc. and free up inspiration.Seem to remember that it was a very old (i.e. probably 1970s) mantra that I came across.

Re: Short project for Post-Apocalyptic Jam 2017
Ah, I knew that I had read this slogan before. Roger's wisdom!
Is 1970 THAT old?
Is 1970 THAT old?
Re: Short project for Post-Apocalyptic Jam 2017
It is older than you are, but younger than I am
Before I was I will Be!
I am I now but I was Not I before.
Up was Down but now is Up, as Left was Right.
Before you believe Anything - Question It!
From asking comes a moment’s shame, but from not asking comes ignorance, and Lifelong Shame!
Harmony comes from listening openly without prejudice, as does vision from seeing without short-sighted eyes.

Re: Short project for Post-Apocalyptic Jam 2017
Any progress Juanjo? Can we help? (ideas of story, puzzle, other...)
Re: Short project for Post-Apocalyptic Jam 2017
Finally this is my idea for the Post-Apocalyptic Jam 2017!!
First I want to say that all this is science fiction and although I am inspired in real facts any resemblance to reality is pure coincidence.
TITLE: The world after the end
STORY:
In 2057 a WHO (World Health Organization) report revealed something that everyone feared but that seemed impossible to happen. If the growth of the world population continued its course in 100 years there would not be enough natural resources to supply humanity.
2066. The governments of the first world powers decide to develop a preventive secret plan against a hypothetical situation of shortage and overpopulation of the planet. The project was called MANKIND.
2122. Reports from different world organizations determine that the world's birth rate has declined and the population is aging dramatically. The MANKIND project is a success.
2149. The world population has been reduced by 90% due to the lack of births and the aging of the population. The MANKIND project is uncontrolled and can cause the extermination of the human race.
Present day. It is not known how many people can remain on the planet, not even if there is someone besides us. We survived in a bunker in the middle of the wasteland, where we had to take refuge after disappearing our small settlement, where we were one of the last births that people remember, a miracle said our mother.
Our daily routine is to find food to survive, there is nothing more. We leave our shelter and explore the surroundings without getting too far, collect objects, food and water (if we find it) and anything that can be useful.
We only have a radio with which we try to communicate every day with someone who can listen us and shed a ray of hope... But there is never an answer. Are we really alone? Should we move further away in search of possible settlements?
Some considerations:
- The game is a first person exploration experience focused in the narrative.
- It's being developed by one person in 25 days (approx.), so the mechanics and the interactive elements will be minimal.
- Some models have been made long time ago and I'm using them to accelerate the development, others I'm doing expressly for this project (very simple and small models).
- I'm using Unity 2017.1
- Initially the music and sound effects will be royalty free.
First WIP images:
Remember: WIP images, there are a lot of work to do... add objects, details, camera effects, particles...
And this is my general idea for this jam... we will see if I can finish in time...
Do you like my idea?
Do you think the planet overpopulation can cause the extermination of the human race?
What are your favorite post-apocalyptic scenarios?
If your curiosity does not leave you alone here you have some information about post-apocalyptic scenarios:

Very good idea, the graphics look promising and the story is interesting.
Reminds me of Georgia guidestone! Do you know it?

Thanks Simon!
You mean this?

I didn't know that monument but it's impressive, I love it! And yes, the message has to do with my story... very inspiring.
Thanks Simon for share this info!

Re: Short project for Post-Apocalyptic Jam 2017
Yes the guidestones are very mysterious!
I read also that there's a similar thing in the airport of Denver, with a "time capsule" burried and not to be opened before a specific date...
It gives plenty of ideas to write scifi stories ^^
Juanjo regarding your current project it made me think of the Georgia stones because of your question: "Do you think the planet overpopulation can cause the extermination of the human race?"
But... what if the extermination of the human race had been planned by the elite/a small group of people? See what's written on the stones:
"Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature."
Everything could have been planned long before the beginning of your game.
All these concepts are quite popular nowadays, and you'd probably interest a lot of young (and less young) players by including conspiracy theories in your scenario.
Of course it's just a scifi theory at the moment, happily! But isn't it a little scary that we don't know the truth?
Anyway your current project for the jam already looks very good and solid. Keep up the great work! In 25 days of development you can do something very surprising and interesting, I have nod doubt. Have fun
Josiah you should try to dig under the stones to see what's burried 6 feet underTime Capsule
Placed six feet below this spot

Re: Short project for Post-Apocalyptic Jam 2017
Simon I totally agree with you about the theory of the extermination of the human race planned by dark organizations... maybe the story of "The world after the end" will surprise you... I can't say more
Re: Short project for Post-Apocalyptic Jam 2017
For reference consider the Movie "Children of Men" (2006)?
The Quiet Earth (1985)
- even - Logan's Run (1976)
The Omega Man (1971) re-imagined in "I am legend" (2007)
Really looking forward to this one.

Re: Short project for Post-Apocalyptic Jam 2017
Wow! Roger great references for get inspiration, thanks a lot!
I've always liked movies and games related to dystopian worlds where society struggles to survive some kind of catastrophe.
Anyway I don't want (and I can't) to create a complex plot due to lack of time basically.
I hope the short story told in the game is enough to feed your curiosity!
Thanks again to all for your support and your ideas, are fantastic!

Re: Short project for Post-Apocalyptic Jam 2017
It is so wonderfully dark and grim!
I would create so many nightmares in my own mind that I would run screamingly insane!

Re: Short project for Post-Apocalyptic Jam 2017
I'd come with a flashlight in order to see where I put my feet, but it looks very good (maybe add an option to increase luminosity for people who want?)
